The odd-eyed, water-loving Van cat: its traits, conservation work and where to see it at the Van Cat House.

The Van Cat

Van's mascot

The Van cat is known for its snow-white, semi-long coat. Its most striking feature is that its two eyes are often different colours: one blue and one amber.

Characteristics

  • Eye colour: Both blue, both amber, or one of each.
  • Eye development: Kittens are born with grey eyes; the colour starts changing in the first weeks and settles at around forty days.
  • Loves water: Unlike most cats, the Van cat enjoys playing in water and even swimming.
  • Temperament: Clean, playful, affectionate and loyal to its owner.

Conservation

The pure-bred Van cat was once at risk of dying out. To protect it, the Van Cat House was set up at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, where the cats are bred, cared for and protected.

Where to see them

  • Van Cat House (Yüzüncü Yıl University campus): Open to visitors and one of the city's most popular stops.
  • You may also meet Van cats at some souvenir and silver workshops in the city.

Check visiting hours with the university before you go.
