Which border crossing to use from Iran to Van: Kapıköy, Gürbulak and Esendere, plus the airport and getting around the city.

Getting to Van

By road from Iran

Van is one of the closest Turkish cities to Iran. Travellers from Iran mainly use three border crossings:

  • Kapıköy (Razi on the Iranian side): The closest crossing to Van, about 100 km from the city centre, near Khoy in West Azerbaijan Province. It operates during daytime hours, which may change by season.
  • Gürbulak (Bazargan on the Iranian side): The largest and busiest crossing in the region, open 24 hours. It is in Doğubayazıt (Ağrı province); from there you reach Van via Muradiye.
  • Esendere (Serow on the Iranian side): Close to Urmia, connecting to Van through Yüksekova in Hakkari province.

Always check current opening hours and entry conditions with official sources before you travel.

By air

Van Ferit Melen Airport is about 8 km from the city centre, with regular flights to Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and other cities. See the Van Airport page for details.

Intercity buses

Buses run from Van's main bus terminal (otogar) to cities all over Türkiye. You can buy tickets at the terminal, at bus company offices in the city centre, or through travel agencies. Some companies offer a free shuttle from their office to the terminal.

Practical tips

  • Nearby sights such as Van Castle and Edremit are easy to reach by dolmuş.
  • For more distant places like Muradiye Waterfall or Hoşap Castle, use the district minibuses that leave from the bus terminal.
  • If you are travelling as a group, hiring a car for the day can be good value.
