Gatherings on winter nights
Winters in Van are long and cold. On these long nights, neighbours and relatives take turns gathering at each other's homes. At these evenings, known locally as şevbihêrk or şeb-nişin, people drink tea, tell stories and sing folk songs. This tradition is the living source of the region's musical culture.
An oral tradition: the dengbêj
One of the region's oldest musical traditions is the art of the dengbêj. Often without any instrument, dengbêj singers recount historical events and tales of heroism and love in long melodic narratives. Dengbêj houses and events in Van keep this tradition alive.
Folk songs and halay
- At weddings and festivals, people dance the halay to the def (frame drum) and zurna (shawm).
- Turkish and Kurdish folk songs from the Van area reflect the region's diverse cultures.
- The bağlama (long-necked lute) and kaval (shepherd's flute) are also common in local music.
Where to listen
Concerts at cultural centres, Nowruz celebrations, festivals and live-music nights at some restaurants are good chances to hear local music.
