A rich craft heritage
With its long tradition of herding and the legacy of many civilisations, Van is exceptionally rich in handicrafts. The main crafts include:
- Kilim and carpet weaving
- Cicim (brocaded flat-weave)
- Needle lace and lacework
- Knitted wool socks
- Silverwork
- Ceramics and pottery
- Traditional clothing and headdresses
The Van kilim
The kilim is the most important product of Van's weaving tradition. Woven by herding families, kilims were also used for everyday items such as cushions, saddlebags, sacks, cradle covers and load covers.
- Colours: Traditionally burgundy, navy, white and brown, obtained from natural dyes.
- Motifs: Symbols of nature and belief such as the wolf's track, scorpion, fire, lovebirds and mountains.
Silverwork
Silversmithing is a long-established craft in Van. Rings, belts, necklaces and women's jewellery often carry designs inspired by Urartian motifs. The workshops near Van Castle are a good place to see the craft in action.
Ceramics
The region has a rich ceramic tradition going back to the Hurrians, Mitanni and Urartians, from animal-shaped vessels to red-and-black painted wares. You can see examples at the Van Museum.
As souvenirs
Kilims, silver jewellery and hand-knitted wool socks are among the most meaningful gifts to take home from Van.
